It’s no secret that us girls have dreamt about prom from the moment we stepped foot into high school. It’s just been instilled in us through movies, TV series, and books that prom is the highlight of high school. And now that prom season is finally here, we’re here to help you get ready just in time for prom night.

Men have it easy when it comes to prep, but for us ladies, every detail of prom night has to be perfect — getting your nails done, getting waxed all over, getting highlights, down to finding the perfect prom date and, of course, finding the perfect dress. All of this just for one night.

Don’t worry, we’ve got your back — keep on reading for our beauty breakdown and some tips for the perfect prom night!

For The Skin You’re In

From Vogue

Make sure you’ve invested in a solid skincare routine before prom. Prepping your skin to looking clear, healthy, and glowing will give you the smoothest application for your makeup on the day itself.

If you haven’t been able to stick to a skincare routine and prom’s right around the corner, you can still hack it. Put on a sheet mask the night before to get a temporary boost, and make sure you get tons of beauty rest so you can at least avoid having dark circles under your eyes.

Look For Possible MUAs and book them — fast

Booking a makeup artist can actually be the easiest task to tick off your prom checklist, especially if you already have someone in mind. But what makes the job hard for first-timers is actually finding someone who you can trust with your prom makeup.

So make sure you do a ton of research. There’s plenty of results if you look up makeup artists on Google, but there’s a whole lot more on Instagram. The best part is that you actually get to see the work they’ve done on other people too. It’s a great way to evaluate the perfect fit for you.

When you find an MUA you really like, contact them immediately to know if they’re actually free on your prom day. Remember, demand for MUAs is high during prom season so you’ll want to book an appointment fast before the ones you like are fully booked.

Or DIY Prom Night Makeup!

If you’re confident and have the right products and tools for it, then you can definitely do your own prom makeup! Check out Pinterest and YouTube for inspiration, and make sure to experiment and try out the looks before prom night.

That last part is crucial — you don’t want any do-overs on the day itself because of clumpy mascara or smudged eyeliner! It’s also a good idea to take a few photos of your test look to check that it’ll look good in the pictures.

If you aren’t a fan of heavy makeup, then you can take the minimalist route with some BB cream, groomed brows, mascara, a hint of blush and of course, a lipstick of your choice.

Get your Brows Done Three Days Before

We don’t want unkempt brows for prom now, do we? Whether you’re getting your brows waxed or threaded, remember to get it done a few days before to give your skin time to breathe.

Cleaning up your brows beforehand will also give your makeup artist an easier time filling in your brows. But aside from that, trust me — you’ll be able to see a whole different world altogether with groomed brows.

Get Your Nails Done

It’s a good idea to actually get your nails done the day before prom, or even the morning of. This is to avoid a chipped manicure and little nail accidents us girls know all too well. Make sure to tell the salon to apply an extra coat of clear nail polish on top to reduce chipping or breakage.

But if you want to get your nails done a few days before the prom without having to worry about nail accidents, try out a gel manicure. They dry really fast and last for about two months. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but it’ll definitely be one less thing to worry about before prom.

Schedule a Waxing Session

Get yourself waxed a few days before prom, as again, this will give your skin more time to breathe. Getting yourself waxed days in advance also saves you some time to relax on the day of prom itself. It’ll usually take you a good thirty minutes in the waxing booth, but before even getting to the booth you’ll have to wait with a long line of fellow wax-goers. So you might want to go ahead and block off a whole morning just for this.

Finding The Perfect Fit

Get Comfy Shoes

Think about all the walking and the dancing you’re going to be doing during prom night. I promise you that your feet will start to hurt like hell during the first hour, and girl, it won’t be pretty!

Avoid having to sacrifice comfort for style by devoting time to finding the right pair. Look for a pair of heels that’ll give you some height but still has some stability. Opt for gold or silver heels with a bit of shimmer to match the glitz and glam of the night.

Whatever pair you end up buying, don’t forget to break them in beforehand. Practice walking each night after you’ve bought your heels until prom night itself. You’ll thank yourself for it later. If you’re wearing a long gown, practice walking with it on as well — you don’t want to trip over your train while you’re walking out to the dance floor.

The Purse To Match Your Dress

Look for a purse that’s stylish and easy to carry, but big enough to carry all your essentials. You’ll need enough room for your phone, touch-up products like lipstick and blotting paper, some emergency cash, and whatever else you deem essential for the night. It’s also a good idea to get a purse that has a strap or a chain so you don’t have to hold it for the whole night (especially if you’re going to be dancing!).

Either have your clutch match your dress or go for neutral colors like black, silver, and gold.

The Right Accessories

Go minimal with the accessories with a simple necklace, a pair of earrings, or your charm bracelet. Your dress should be doing all the talking during prom night so let’s not go too bling-bling on it.

Saying Yes to the Prom Dress

Oh yes. The prom dress. The most crucial highlight of the night.

Having a designer custom-make your prom dress may be the easiest way to get the perfect dress, but again you’re going to have to take the MUA route here and do a ton of research beforehand.

But if you’re shopping off the rack, finding the dress may take weeks. You’re going to have to go to a ton of stores to try to find something you like in your price range. So make sure you’ve done your research beforehand as well.

Tip: Go on Pinterest and find a dress that you really like and go from there. Having a peg in mind — even if it’s just a certain color or silhouette — will give you an easier time in looking for the Dress. You’ll find the right one eventually. ❤
